Why I Stopped Chasing Hustle Culture (And How You Can Too)
For a long time, I believed the message that success meant working harder than everyone else.
Wake up earlier. Be the first one to the office. Do more.
Sleep less. Say yes to everything.
The internet calls this "hustle culture."
The idea that productivity equals worth.
And for years, I chased it.
Not because I was greedy for success…Well, maybe a little bit!
But because I genuinely believed that was the only path to success.
But somewhere along the way, something changed.
I realized I wasn't building freedom.
I was building exhaustion.
Today, my life still looks busy on the outside. I run businesses, work in healthcare, create content, and manage a household, but on the inside, it feels completely different.
Because I stopped chasing hustle culture and started building a balanced life hustle instead.
And if you're feeling burned out, overwhelmed, or quietly wondering if there’s another way…
There is.
What Hustle Culture Gets Wrong
Hustle culture teaches that success comes from constant output.
But what it ignores is the cost.
Many women reach midlife and realize they have spent decades:
• Taking care of everyone else
• Saying yes to obligations
• Pushing through exhaustion
• Measuring themselves by productivity
Eventually, something inside you asks:
"Is this really how I want to live the rest of my life?"
For me, the answer was an astounding NO!
The Moment I Realized Hustle Culture Wasn't Working
The turning point wasn't dramatic. Wait, yes it was, it was during covid, but it didn't instantly hit me until the smoke cleared after the fire.
I noticed that even when things were going well, career success, accomplishments, and productivity, I still felt unhappy and I didn't like what my life had become.
There was always another goal.
Another project.
Another thing to optimize.
Success started to feel like a treadmill.
And that’s when I realized something important:
The goal of life is not to maximize productivity.
The goal of life is to build a life you actually enjoy living.
What I Do Now Instead!
Instead of chasing hustle culture, I follow a few simple principles. And trust me it did not happen overnight. I still fall into old habits from time to time, but they allow me to stay productive while protecting the parts of life that matter most.
5 Practical Ways to Step Away From Hustle Culture
1. Stop Measuring Your Worth by Productivity
This is the biggest mindset shift.
Your value is not determined by how much you produce.
You are allowed to:
• rest
• slow down
• say no (this is a hard one for alot of us)
• leave time unscheduled
Success is not supposed to feel like constant pressure.
2. Protect Your Energy Before Your Schedule
Most productivity advice focuses on time management.
But energy matters more.
Ask yourself:
• What drains me?
• What fuels me?
• What commitments are no longer aligned?
Then start removing the things that quietly steal your energy.
3. Replace “More” With “Better.”
Hustle culture says:
More projects. More goals. More income streams.
But balance often comes from doing fewer things better.
Instead of adding more, ask:
What actually matters most right now?
Focus there first.
4. Build Systems That Support Your Life
The real secret to balance is simple systems.
Examples:
• weekly planning routine
• family task systems
• simple household organization
• time blocks for personal priorities
When systems run quietly in the background, life stops feeling chaotic.
5. Redefine Success for This Stage of Life
What success meant at 25 might not fit your life at 45.
Midlife often brings a shift toward:
• peace
• freedom
• time
• health
• meaningful work
That doesn’t mean you stop achieving.
It means you start choosing what is worth achieving.
The Balanced Life Hustle
I didn’t stop working hard.
I stopped working hard for the wrong reasons and the wrong people.
Now I focus on building a life that supports:
• meaningful work
• family time
• financial stability
• personal freedom
• slower mornings and calmer evenings
This is what I call The Balanced Life Hustle.
Not hustle culture.
Not burnout.
Just intentional progress.
If You Feel Tired of Hustle Culture, Start Here
You don’t have to quit your job or dramatically change your life overnight.
Start with small shifts.
Ask yourself:
• What am I doing out of pressure rather than purpose?
• Where am I overcommitted?
• What would a balanced life actually look like for me?
Then begin building toward that version of life.
One decision at a time.
